I'm really big on juice fasting. Both fresh vegetable and fresh fruit juices are great, but I would definitely recommend emphasizing the vegetable juices as they are more alkalinizing and contain less sugar. Juice fasting cleanses the body while supplying a dramatic increase in vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Vegetable and fruit juices are a living fuel that takes no digestive energies from the body, allowing the body's entire focus to be on healing and rejuvenation. It is packed with vitamins, minerals, living enzymes, antioxidants, phytochemicals, yet low enough in calories to force the body to cannibalize its own residual waste, propelling you to vigorous physical health and clarity of mind. Fruit and vegetable juices are the cleansers, energizers, builders, and regenerators of the human system. A combination of either fresh, raw fruit or vegetable juices will supply all the enzymes, vitamins, minerals, protein, and fats critical to increased vitality! By adding live juices to one's diet as a daily routine, you supply the body with easily absorbed nutrients, while the body is cleansing itself in the fasting state.
Hi Cassey! Thanks so much for such an informative post. I’m 16 years old and have had an ongoing struggle with learning to love my body. When these first became popular a year or so ago, I was very tempted by them. The advertising is so dangerous and *really* appeals to people who are more susceptible to developing an eating disorder. I’m glad I never gave in, though, because there really isn’t any shortcut with this sort of thing.

Are you still on a “healing” protocol diet or more just “healthy” protocol? Have you dealt with any anxiety along your path? How do you still implement all your yummy foods in your healthy diet? And lastly, what supplements do you feel like have made the biggest difference in your energy levels? I’m on my own healing journey for an auto immune disorder and it can be so overwhelming. Thanks in advance! Love, Kristina

However, for many people that want to “lose weight,” their expectation is that they would like to reduce body fat from those trouble spots like the hips, thighs, belly, and arms. And one of the quickest methods to check for “weight loss” is the woefully misleading bathroom scale. Unfortunately, the bathroom scale gives you absolutely no indication if you’re losing fat, muscle, water, or anything else for that matter.

Many different smoothies are part of Indian, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern cuisine. Fruit sharbat (a popular West and South Asian drink) sometimes include yogurt and honey, too. In India, the lassi is a smoothie or milkshake comprising crushed ice, yogurt, sometimes sugar, and often mango; in the south, pineapple smoothies made with crushed ice, sugar and no yogurt are more popular.

There are many detoxification programs and detox recipes, depending on your individual needs. Many programs follow a seven-day schedule because, as Bennett explains, "it takes the body time to clean the blood." His program involves fasting on liquids for two days, followed by a carefully planned five-day detox diet to allow the digestive system to rest. Page recommends a three- to seven-day juice fast (drinking only fresh fruit and vegetable juices and water) as an effective way to release toxins.
A healthier way to think about resetting yourself in the New Year is to lose the restrictive mindset and instead focus on foods you can add to your diet for their nutritional benefits, says Zeitlin. Incorporating fresh veggies, like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and spinach, into your diet has proven benefits to help your body run properly — including ridding itself of waste products.
And for all this “detox” talk out there, remember your body has its own built-in filters your, liver, lungs, spleen, and kidneys. But wait, don’t my body’s filters get gunked up with “toxins” and need a good “cleansing?”  Unless you’re eating a steady diet of heavy metals and other known pollutants, probably not.  You can learn more about this here.

I used to be slim in my high school days, but since college I have been gaining weight, so much so, that I now look bad, and everyone around is commenting on my weight. I did try some weight loss programs but honestly could not stick to any for too long, none of them showed results anyway, and my problem is not solved a bit. Please, please can anyone suggest me a good way to lose weight? Thanks in advance.
Really good ideas!! I love the different teas! I’m a big fan of peppermint so am looking forward to trying the others! One note though, chewing him cause air and acid build up to bloat in the stomach as the body thinks it’s about to get food so starts the digesting process ready for when food enters it, most weight loss plans, fitness instructors and personal trainers will advise against any gum when trying to lose weight and/or inches 🙂 xxx

There are plenty of reasons you should be eating breakfast. What’s more, because you’re eating nothing but celery or drinking gallons of lemon-flavored water, you’re going to be hungry — really, really hungry. You need food to survive and when you don’t eat enough, you may feel weak, dizzy, nauseous or disoriented. Worse, following a restricted diet can cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Detox diets are particularly dangerous for diabetics because they can cause low blood sugar.
Hi Cassey! I am an 18 year old student in Singapore, and I would be taking the GCE A level exams at the end of this year, which are very very crucial for me as they’re going to determine which university I’ll be going to and my future. I am still working out with your videos on Blogilates, and I would really love to try the PIIT28 program. Can I still buy it next year after my exams are over? I certainly have no time to devote myself to a rigid 28-day program for now as school is very hectic right now. Thank you so much Cassey and be assured that I will support you in whatever you do! (:
Naturally losing weight is a healthy and safe method of weight loss. It generally involves making small tweaks to your diet, exercise routine and lifestyle. In addition, when you're making small lifestyle changes (typical in natural weight loss), you're more likely to continue these habits long-term. A combination of these factors can help you lose weight naturally and in safe and healthy manner.
Through the proliferation of beneficial bifidobacteria in the gut, certain studies have found that consuming more probiotics may be helpful for those trying to lose weight — since eating foods containing them is associated with enhanced weight loss and protection against obesity. (9) To consume more probiotics in your diet, try eating yogurt, kefir or cultured veggies at least a few times a week, while also considering a supplement.
Befriend the produce section. It's no secret that eating vegetables is good for you. But shockingly, only 27 percent of American adults eat the recommended three or more servings they should be getting daily, according to a CDC report. Aim to up your vegetable intake to one pound per day. Not only will it help you hit your weight-loss goals, but eating a rainbow of vegetables can also help protect against cancer, heart disease, and the effects of aging. (Looking for dinner inspo? These creative recipes make the most of spiralized veggies.)
Detoxification or detoxication (detox for short)[1] is the physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from a living organism, including the human body, which is mainly carried out by the liver. Additionally, it can refer to the period of withdrawal during which an organism returns to homeostasis after long-term use of an addictive substance.[2][3] In medicine, detoxification can be achieved by decontamination of poison ingestion and the use of antidotes as well as techniques such as dialysis and (in a limited number of cases) chelation therapy.[4]

Typically, skinny teas are composed of one or more of the following ingredients: green tea, mint, fennel, ginger, yerba mate, senna, dandelion and/or milk thistle. There’s nothing novel about these ingredients, and certain cultures have been using them as natural digestive aids for thousands of years, so each of these ingredients have proven themselves to be effective in alternative medicine, which is why they’re so commonly found in these teas. For example, the reason why people who are sick with a stomach flu are advised to take gingerale is the ginger content/flavor (although there isn’t much ginger in it at all). Similarly, Middle Eastern cultures are known for drinking mint tea after a meal, since mint leaves are also a digestive aid. Native South American cultures have been using Yerba Mate for thousands of years as a digestive aid to reduce bloating and/or constipation. All that being said, despite the fact that “skinny” is not synonymous with “healthy”, there is absolutely nothing wrong with drinking “skinny” teas that contain these ingredients. In fact, when I have a queasy stomach, I usually make a potent cocktail of grated fresh ginger, fennel seed, and muddled fresh mint.

So what's the problem? "We want to pick a little bone here with the fitness industry," Super Sister Fitness health bloggers Liz and Sarah said in a YouTube video. "Our No. 1 problem with the fitness industry is that it's all about selling you products, pills, potions, powders [and now teas], like what is all this stuff? ... You don't need any of that, it's so silly.

Prepare the navy beans by adding 3 cups of fresh water to a pot for each cup of dried beans, so that the liquid level is about 1-2 inches about the beans. Bring the water to a boil and then reduce to a simmer, partially covering the pot. Skim off any foam that develops, and simmer for 1 to 1 ½ hours until tender. Add to a salad or enjoy as a dish on its own.
Not only are detox diets not good for people with certain medical conditions, they could be harmful. There is no research showing they improve blood pressure or cholesterol or have a positive effect on the heart. For people with diabetes, they may be quite dangerous. Any diet that severely restricts what you eat could lead to dangerously low blood sugar if you take medicine for diabetes.

Flax seed has been known to help with digestive ailments for centuries, and this goes hand in hand with weight loss. Flax seeds are high in fiber, as well as mucilage, which helps lower cholesterol. It has also been proven to lower blood sugar levels. With such a high amount of fiber, flax seeds also act as a natural gentle way to regulate bowel movements and help promote healthy gut bacteria, both which work well to help you manage weight. It is important to eat flaxseed ground, as it tends to pass through the digestive track undigested if eaten whole, thus depriving you of its nutritional benefits.

But take a look at the likes and comments. It’s very very low. An account with 1.3 million fans gets under 1000 likes and like an avg of 10 comments? That leads me to think that they are either buying followers and/or spending money to run those annoying sponsored ads. You will notice this low like to follower ratio on many tea account pages as well.
Why do we buy into these things? Misconceptions seem to abound whenever you repeat a lie often enough in pop culture. And who hasn’t heard one of their favorite celebrities promoting one of these? Beyoncé allegedly did the Master Cleanse and she looks … masterfully cleansed, right? Kelly Ripa is doing the Alkaline Cleanse and she looks … alkaline, right? Oh dear. Holly Corbett at Prevention tried the Master Cleanse and reported "killer cramps" and "cat breath." Moreover, every dietitian she spoke to said it was bad news. There’s probably something to that, perhaps a little more than the advice from a celebrity’s trainer.
In 2010 environmental thought leader Bruce Lourie and environmentalist Rick Smith wrote the international best seller, Slow Death by Rubber Duck: The Secret Danger of Everyday Things, an exposé on the toxic load that’s poisoning the environment, the food chain, and us. The thesis of the book was that we all need to be more careful about what we put in our bodies, on our bodies, and into the earth’s landfills because it has a demonstrable (and measurable) impact on all of us. Fair point. But what about the toxic load that’s outside of our control, that’s in our workplaces, our cars, our restaurants? So Lourie and Smith decided to write a follow-up, Toxin Toxout: Getting Harmful Chemicals out of our Bodies and Our World, about how to get all the toxins out of your system once they’re in there. And that’s where it gets a little bit more nebulous, particularly in a detox landscape that’s overly-marketed and full of false claims. So, in a hilarious and fascinating account, the duo decided to test it all through self-experimentation—and by talking to a lot of experts in the process. They exposed themselves to any number of bad things—shampoos, cosmetics, fabrics and mattresses, non-stick pans, plastic bottles, and pesticide-laden food—and then they measured their blood and sweat. And then employed everything from from chelation to sauna therapy to detox diets to see what expedited the cleanse. Some things definitely did nothing (ionic footbaths). Some things made them pass out (overzealous sauna-ing). But some things worked—namely anything that compelled the body to sweat, and anything that burned fat (most toxins are lipophilic, i.e., they’re attracted to fat). Below, we asked Bruce Lourie some questions.

Vitamin D: Some experts think that sleep disorders have risen to epidemic levels for one major reason: a widespread vitamin D deficiency, says Dr. Gottfried. That's not exactly ideal, since adequate sleep is critical for your metabolism and actually achieving healthy, natural weight loss. Dr. Gottfried says it's best to aim for 2,000 to 5,000 IUs of vitamin D each day (try using this simple vitamin D dosage calculator to figure out how much you need), as a 12-week weight-loss study found that doing so resulted in lower amounts of fat mass.
Berberine: Blood sugar rises with age, and berberine is one of the supplements proven to help you normalize glucose. It also works to reduce inflammation in your body, which can help with weight loss. And as if that weren't enough, "berberine can also curb sugar cravings, especially for those suffering from diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and obesity," says Dr. Gottfried. Take 300 to 500mg once to three times per day.
Naked Me Tea Detox was developed by two female healthcare professionals to create a natural weight loss tea without senna --a laxative that is used treat constipation --not weight loss. Instead the company says that the licorice root and cardamom ginger and black pepper help to boot metabolism and aid in weight loss. Consider using their handy Steep Machine to brew the perfect cup this loose tea right into your mug.
A body of research out of Pennsylvania State University finds that eating water-rich foods such as zucchini, tomatoes, and cucumbers during meals reduces your overall calorie consumption. Other water-rich foods include soups and salads. You won’t get the same benefits by just drinking your water, though (but you will get other benefits of staying hydrated). Because the body processes hunger and thirst through different mechanisms, it simply doesn’t register a sense of fullness with water (or soda, tea, coffee, or juice). Here are 15 weight loss tips doctors wish you would stop following.
Great post! There’s no quick solution to weight loss. It’s hard work and a lot of self-love. If you want to incorporate natural teas into your everyday, definitely do! But avoid these terrible “fit” tea fads. If you’re feeling bloated and want some tea to help break things up, try an herbal mint or an oolong or a green tea. You can go pick them up at your local grocery store! If you need to pack in a few extra antioxidants into your diet, drink some white or green tea. Need help relaxing? Chamomile is your best friend. Extra energy? Black, mate, and matcha are your best friend! I guess what I’m trying to say is that tea is already a wonderful, natural thing that’s great to have in your everyday. Don’t jeopardize your body with these fake, supplemental “teas”.
Nutrition experts don’t buy into the idea that we need any additional help eliminating toxic substances. “Our bodies naturally detox themselves every single day,” says Keri Gans, RDN, owner of Keri Gans Nutrition in New York City and author of The Small Change Diet. “That’s why we have a liver and kidneys.” In other words, every time you pee, poop, or sweat your butt off at the gym, you’re getting rid of waste products that could otherwise harm your body. Not to mention, no randomized controlled trials — the gold standard for scientific research — have ever found that giving your gastrointestinal (GI) system a break from digesting food is beneficial in any way.
