“These products usually contain laxative ingredients, including senna, which sometimes is habit forming,” says Lisa Jones, RD, practicing in Brookhaven, Pennsylvania. “Overuse can harm the colon and permanently change the digestive tract.” Documented risks can range from nausea, diarrhea, and dehydration to constipation, and even kidney and liver failure.

Pawing for a protein drink after working up a sweat can help build stronger muscles, increase training efficacy, and speed up muscle recovery time. Packing in the protein can help the body rebuild throughout the day. Contemporary issues in protein requirements and consumption for resistance trained athletes. Wilson J, Wilson GJ. Some detoxes target the other end of your digestive tract with products and supplements that claim to cleanse the colon by promoting bowel movements. They often identify “waste buildup” as a problem, though there’s no evidence to suggest this is true. In fact, research has suggested the opposite, including one study published in The Journal of Family Practice that found colon cleansing could actually have detrimental health effects. (3)

Eating too few calories, in particular, can make you feel awful all over, causing headaches, moodiness, weakness, and constipation, as INSIDER previously reported. And Hartley added that cleanses can be especially rough on your brain. Fat is crucial for optimal brain function, and carbohydrates are the brain's primary source of fuel, she explained — so things can go awry when you're on a cleanse that runs low on one or both nutrients.
However, for many people that want to “lose weight,” their expectation is that they would like to reduce body fat from those trouble spots like the hips, thighs, belly, and arms. And one of the quickest methods to check for “weight loss” is the woefully misleading bathroom scale. Unfortunately, the bathroom scale gives you absolutely no indication if you’re losing fat, muscle, water, or anything else for that matter.
Advocates for detox typically describe the liver and kidney as acting like filters, where toxins are physically captured and retained. It’s argued that these organs need to be cleaned out periodically, like you’d squeeze out a sponge, or change the air filter in your car. But the reality is that the kidney and liver don’t work this way. The liver performs a series of chemical reactions to convert toxic substances into ones that can be eliminated in bile or urine. The liver is self-cleansing — toxins don’t accumulate in it, and unless you have documented liver disease, it generally functions without any problem. The kidney excretes waste products into the urine — otherwise the substance stays in the blood. Anyone that suggests these organs need a “cleanse” is demonstrating that they don’t understand basic anatomy or physiology.
Basically, detoxification means cleansing the blood. This is done by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin. However, when these systems are compromised, impurities aren't properly filtered and the body is adversely affected.
With 2016 upon us, it’s finally time get serious about your health. You’re resolving to eat better and exercise more. But first, you need to reset your body – and purge yourself of all of your lifestyle and dietary overindulgences. But how? The options seem limitless, and everyone has advice: There’s Dr. Oz, Gwyneth, and even your favourite Kardashian has advice: They’re all telling you how it’s essential to “detox”, “cleanse” and “flush” away all of your toxins. Your local pharmacy has an ever-growing section of products promising a newer, more pure you: supplements, homeopathy, ear candles, and an entire aisle of “detox kits” all promise to suck toxins out of your body. Don’t forget your local naturopath who sells IV vitamin drips as the detoxification solution to your problems. The approaches may differ but all the advocates are completely convinced of one fact: Detoxing will deliver a renewed body and better health. Not only will you look better, you’ll feel better. It is a new year. Wouldn’t a purification from last year’s habits (dietary and otherwise) of last year be the best way to start? Well before you pull out your credit card, there is one fact that “detox” advocates are reluctant to tell you.

None of this is to say that the foods you might eat on a cleanse are "bad." If you genuinely enjoy green smoothies or raw vegetables, there's no reason to stop eating them. But subsisting on only green smoothies for an arbitrary amount of time won't won't magically flush out your body. At best, it'll be pricey and unnecessary. At worst, it'll leave you feeling miserable.
Finding something you enjoy is an important component to any fitness routine, too, because—duh—it means you'll be more likely to stick with it. So if running isn't your thing, don't sweat it—try a Zumba class, or meet girlfriends for Spin after work. (You could even try working out according to your Zodiac sign.) "You might get results from something you hate, but those results won't last," says Jess Sims, C.P.T., a Fhit Pro trainer at Fhitting Room in New York City. And don't be afraid to branch out and see if there's something else to love. "Varying your workouts will help keep you entertained and help you progress because your body doesn't get used to the same movements," adds Sims. Plain and simple: There's no one-size-fits-all workout, so don't box yourself in.
This purifying broth contains fennel to help bile flow in your gallbladder; garlic to help with liver and gall bladder function; cabbage, excellent for detoxification in both the liver and kidneys; and shitake mushrooms to boost liver enzymes. Serve soup with a side of sauerkraut with sliced apples. Sauerkraut contains probiotics, the good bacteria that protect your GI tract. Make sure to use traditionally fermented sauerkraut to get the greatest health benefits. Apples boost both kidney and liver function.

Muscles are calorie-guzzling tissues and help keep metabolism high, which is why protein and exercise are so important for achieving one’s optimal weight. Additionally, fats, along with protein and fiber, are slow-burning nutrients, meaning they are digested slowly and keep your appetite satisfied. These nutrients are also essential in the body for countless metabolic processes. Below are some suggestions to help you “undiet.”

Drinking plenty of water can go a long way in flushing out toxins. While you’re on your detox diet, aim to drink eight glasses of filtered water daily. That includes a glass of water (ideally room-temperature or lukewarm) as soon as you wake up in the morning. A helpful hint: opting for lemon water or a DIY infused water may enhance the detoxing effects of your morning hydration.
We’ve been doing green smoothies for about a year now and my 5 yo actually complains if we are out if spinach lol! One tip I’ve learned if you’ve never tried it is to buy over ripe bananas (grocery stores will often give a discount if you ask), peel and freeze them. I add them frozen to our smoothies and it eliminates the need for ice. Plus frozen bananas when blended take on a super smooth creamy texture that definitely enhances the smoothie. Sometimes for my daughter I just do milk, frozen banana and spinach…she calls it her milkshake :) Yum!!!
Meditate. Many religions and philosophies advocate fasting as a way of refocusing the mind and developing a sense of peace. While you're detoxifying your body, try to rid yourself of grudges, anger, sadness, and other negative feelings. Use the time you would usually spend eating or preparing food to think about your goals and aspirations. Distill your thoughts in a journal.
You need to understand that when you use these sorts of gimmicks, you are just a number in their sales funnel. The business is money, and the storefront is “health.” But not real health. It’s just the illusion of health. They get richer, you get poorer, and when the hype and excitement of the next gimmick wears off, you’re straight back to where you were, and often times even worse off. All these gimmicks have physiological effects that, in some cases, can make your body a more efficient fat storing machine to protect against further weight loss attempts.
Side effects can continue once a detox ends. Some people experience post-detox effects like nausea and diarrhea. Advocate call these “cleansing reactions” and will assure you it’s “toxins leaving the body”. A more plausible, science-based explanation is that this is a consequence of restarting the digestive process after a period of catharsis, where, depending on the extent and duration of fasting, little to no digestion occurred, and the normal gastrointestinal colonies of bacteria may have been severely disrupted. It’s the same effect seen in hospitalized patients who have difficulty initially digesting food after being fed intravenously. The detox ingredients, and resulting catharsis, may irritate the colon to such an extent that it may take time for digestion to return to normal.
A complete body detox is a step-by-step process that focuses on each organ involved in ridding the body of toxins. The program should focus on removing harmful organisms, chemicals, and toxic metals while cleansing your colon, liver, and kidneys. Cleansing the colon is an important part of any full body cleansing protocol. Our Colon Cleanse Kit will help open up your main route of elimination and maximize your body's natural ability to cleanse itself.

There is just as little evidence for detox programs. The only one to have been evaluated is via L. Ron Hubbard and the Church of Scientology, called the Hubbard Purification Rundown. It involves niacin supplements, saunas, exercise, polyunsaturated oil consumption, and vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. The protocol was used on a small group of firefighters after 9/11. With small sample sizes and no control groups, any critical evaluation of the results is impossible. Another evaluation with firefighters was equally limited by a lack of proper randomization and blinding. The same protocol was also used in healthy volunteers. Owing to a lack of blinding and placebo, the results are not credible, which is probably why the paper ended up published in Medical Hypotheses.

Other popular liquid cleanses use brewed tea, apple cider vinegar, or lemon water as their main supposed detoxifying ingredient. And while some research, such as one study published in the journal Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, has linked those foods to potential health benefits, none is a magic bullet on its own. (2) In fact, pros say, there’s only one liquid you really need to flush toxins out of your system: water.
