Turns out, senna leaf, which is FDA-approved, helps clear people's bowels before they go in for a colonescepy — or, ya know, want to flatten their belly before a vacation SMH. "While daily bowel movements are necessary for proper detoxification — it's a major way the body eliminates toxins," Foroutan says, "herbal laxatives can be really irritating to your digestive tract and can trigger cramping and diarrhea."
At breakfast, go ahead and drink orange juice. But throughout the rest of the day, focus on water instead of juice or soda. The average American consumes an extra 245 calories a day from soft drinks. That’s nearly 90,000 calories a year—or 25 pounds! And research shows that despite the calories, sugary drinks don’t trigger a sense of fullness the way that food does.
Milk thistle contains active flavonoid compounds collectively known as simirilyn. Simalrilyn helps to protect the liver which is a vital organ when it comes to managing weight and encouraging weight loss. When your liver is bogged down and sluggish, weight loss can be slowed by up to 30%*. The simarilyn in milk thistle can help reverse this. There are several ways to take milk thistle, however I recommend a capsule form (make sure the source is reliable) or as a tincture, since milk thistle does not impart its benefits when steeped in water (such as when made into a tea.)
Weight gain has been associated with excessive consumption of fats, (added) sugars, refined carbohydrates in general, and alcohol consumption.[citation needed] Depression, stress or boredom may also contribute to weight increase,[5] and in these cases, individuals are advised to seek medical help. A 2010 study found that dieters who got a full night's sleep lost more than twice as much fat as sleep-deprived dieters.[6][7]

If there's no apple pie spice hanging out in your pantry, make your own with cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, and cardamom. While hemp protein isn’t the most common of the powdered add-ins, it’s a great plant-derived source of essential fatty acids and protein.

Sure, there are plenty of good reasons to eat salads, like their abundance of fiber and nutrients. But that doesn't mean a specialized diet is required to clear toxins from your body. That's the key takeaway here.

Hi Serafina! This is a fabulous question. I love baked goods so it was very hard for me to give it all up for a period of time. I went through different stages — when I first eliminated most foods, I had headaches and didn’t feel that great. I wasn’t until I broke through that initial hard stage that I felt so much sharper and energetic. Now, I still eat gluten, dairy, and sugar (even though I feel much better when I don’t) but I mix in a lot of healthy foods to balance it all out. Wishing you all the best! — Melissa

In the book Triumph Over Disease, Jack Goldstein, DPM, outlines his true story in overcoming ulcerative colitis by sticking to strict water fasting and a vegetarian diet. Goldstein is one of very few people who has tested his own tongue scrapings, urine, feces, even perspiration during a water fast, Strychacz says. "He found that the contents [during a fast] are different than normal -- that toxins like DDT do get removed."
