"Cleanses" are part of a belief that the colon, liver, and kidneys have years of built up "toxins" (like arsenic) in them which are the cause of many or all diseases; the cure for all illnesses then is to cleanse all the "toxins" (like cyanide) from one's body. Hence the existence of "detox" diets and potions. First of all, it is not true that toxins are the cause of most diseases. Diseases have a variety of causes: bacterial, viral, nutritional, genetic, and many others. Secondly, the kidneys and liver are already hard at work cleansing toxins, which are excreted every day. The idea that toxins somehow build up in these organs is just woo, except kidney stones and other buildups in these organs—which, as it happens, are not affected by cleansing.
Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene: Vitamin A facilitates nutrient absorption by strengthening the lining of the digestive tract. Along with vitamins C and E, it boosts immunity and increases one’s resistance to infections, parasites, and yeast overgrowth. Vitamin A is also necessary for healthy functioning of the thyroid, which is essential for metabolism. Beta-carotene can be converted into vitamin A in the body. A general daily recommendation for vitamin A is 10,000 IU to 20,000 IU and a typical dose of betacarotene is 25,000 IU.3 (Note: Some people, such as those with thyroid disorders or diabetes are not able to efficiently convert beta-carotene to vitamin A, and will do better supplementing with natural vitamin A.)

You’re more likely to eat more—and eat more high-fat, high-calorie foods—when you eat out than when you eat at home. Restaurants today serve such large portions that many have switched to larger plates and tables to accommodate them. You’ll gasp when you see just how bad the unhealthiest restaurant meals in America are. Don’t miss these 9 ways your kitchen setup can help you lose weight.
Milk Thistle: Liver health is critical when talking about weight issues. This organ is the main “filter” for the toxins that the body absorbs from food, air, and water. With the overly toxic world of today, toxic overload is common. Toxic conditions in the body may cause a buildup of fat. As mentioned in the book Weight Loss, The Definitive Guide by Burton Goldburg, “Most people do not associate weight gain with exposure to toxic substances, but the truth is that the poisons that accumulate in our bodies can cause biochemical imbalances and damage organ systems, leading to a host of degenerative diseases. However, well before these diseases take hold, our bodies will often begin to accumulate fat in response to the increased toxic burden.” Milk thistle extract may protect the cells of the liver by blocking the entrance of harmful toxins and helping remove these toxins from the liver cells.14 15In addition, be sure to eliminate any controllable toxic exposures, such as cleaning supplies, beauty products, dry cleaned clothes as well as water and food choices.
Often times, we think the best weight-loss strategies start with a lofty exercise program. But the reality is that workouts are only one part of the picture, and there are a slew of recommendations for how much exercise we should be getting on a regular basis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for example, recommends that adults should exercise 150 minutes a week at a moderate intensity, or incorporate 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity. Meanwhile, a study published in Circulation found that the amount of exercise we get has a direct relationship to our heart health—the more you get, the healthier your heart will be—and they suggest two full hours a day as the new goal.

After several weeks, my swelling drastically improved and I was able to move around with ease. The best part was going to visit the doctor for another round of blood tests and finding out that the most alarming results were reversed! I still had a long way to go but this was a start. I still have to treat my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis disease with Synthroid but I have found some natural supplements to help me feel better. I am not a doctor but will share some things that have helped me.

Caffeine is often included in fat-burning supplements the form of yerba mate or guarana — however, manufacturers may include these substances in amounts they’re rarely used otherwise. Caffeine is a common weight loss ingredient because it often has the effect of dulling someone’s appetite and help increase energy for activity. However, too much caffeine can cause side effects like jitteriness, headaches, insomnia, anxiety, heart palpitations, diarrhea and more.

Regular inadequate sleep plays havoc with more than the bags under your eyes; it also interferes with hormones that regulate hunger and, as a result, sleep-deprived people tend to overeat. As long as you have been exercising previously, it is totally ok to workout while cleansing, but just listen to your body! You know when it is telling you to slow down and what it can handle. It may be best to not exercise on the first day of the cleanse and wait and see how your body is going to handle it and what your energy levels will be like. If you can’t make it through a workout, it’s ok! Cleansing is a great time for rest and reflection for every aspect of your body, so enjoy the time letting your body have a break.

However, for many people that want to “lose weight,” their expectation is that they would like to reduce body fat from those trouble spots like the hips, thighs, belly, and arms. And one of the quickest methods to check for “weight loss” is the woefully misleading bathroom scale. Unfortunately, the bathroom scale gives you absolutely no indication if you’re losing fat, muscle, water, or anything else for that matter.

So maybe it’s time we turn the tables and instead look at fruits and veggies as a delicious way to “cheat” on a healthy weight loss diet. From fire-engine red bell peppers, and buttery-yellow zucchini, to juicy grapes as purple as wine, “eating enough produce seems to be one of the key elements in weight loss and weight maintenance,” says Dave Grotto, RD, LDN, dietitian and author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life.

If you haven't tried chia seeds yet, here's a great opportunity. This superfood ingredient gives you a burst of energy and helps you stay full longer; plus, they go with practically everything. Not everyone loves their texture, but when they're blended into a delicious smoothie, you won't even be able to detect them (while still reaping all their benefits). And as this blogger points out, they're also packed with antioxidants and boost your metabolism. Combined with spinach, unsweetened almond milk, frozen pineapple, and naturally sweet banana, this tasty mixture is the ultimate breakfast treat.

Vitamin B Complex: Collectively the B-vitamin complex supports the brain, intestines, and liver, as well as providing nutritional support for healthy metabolism, helping increase energy, and aiding digestion. Unfortunately, factors such as stress, a poor diet (high in sugar and refined foods) and poor lifestyle choices, can deplete the body’s stores of the B vitamins. 3 Find a B complex formula and follow the directions on the bottle.

Slimming teas can have herbal tea components, herbal extracts or other additives mixed in with the tea. There’s limited good quality research on the effectiveness of these compounds, although some have been around for decades. But there has been a case report of heart failure triggered from using a herbal weight loss tea that was thought to have illegally contained weight loss drugs known to cause heart problems, so caution must be exercised.

Hi friend! It sounds so fancy but it’s really just apple juice you pick up at the grocery store such as Tree Top or Mott’s. You absolutely can make this in a regular blender! You may need to blend it a little longer to make sure the spinach gets nice and smooth but it will still do the job. Start with using all spinach in the recipe, instead of 1/2 spinach and 1/2 kale and see what you think. Drink this down so you can eat a cookie after lunch is my motto. xoxo
Hi Cassey! I am an 18 year old student in Singapore, and I would be taking the GCE A level exams at the end of this year, which are very very crucial for me as they’re going to determine which university I’ll be going to and my future. I am still working out with your videos on Blogilates, and I would really love to try the PIIT28 program. Can I still buy it next year after my exams are over? I certainly have no time to devote myself to a rigid 28-day program for now as school is very hectic right now. Thank you so much Cassey and be assured that I will support you in whatever you do! (:

As a culture we are very aware of our external cleanliness. We clean our teeth daily, we bath and wash our hair daily or every other day and we like to look and smell clean because it makes us feel better. Similarly, I see detoxification as internal cleansing. The problem is that it’s often hard to know when our internal cleansing mechanisms are not functioning well. Unlike other parts of our body it is very hard to know how well our liver is working, and our liver is the main detoxification organ. Apart from synthesizing and secreting bile, the liver acts as a filter for toxins and bacteria in the blood and chemically neutralizes toxins, converting them into substances that can be eliminated by the kidneys.

As for the Alkaline Cleanse, it sounds so nebulous that it’s easy to sell. Remember Dr. Robert O. Young, the pH Miracle guy that started this fad? First, don’t listen to anybody who sells "miracles." The guy got his degrees at a diploma mill and has been charged with fraud for his health claims, according to QuackWatch.org. He’s claimed to have healed everything with his pH solution, but the only thing he’s healed is an ailing bank account.

According to Cosmopolitan Magazine, there are also health risks associated with teatoxes. Severe stomach cramps and diarrhea are not uncommon symptoms to experience while teatoxing. Nutritionist Renée Leonard-Stainton, founder of Reneenaturally.com, says this isn’t an unusual response to senna, an herb that’s in colon cleanser tea bags and other diet tea products. “Senna has a strong laxative effect and it can cause headaches, diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. In the long-term, it can make the bowel reliant on this kind of stimulation to work.”’ Senna also can lead to electrolyte shortage and nutrient deficiencies. Furthermore, your body already naturally detoxes your body via your liver and kidneys. Think about it logically: if toxins were actually building up in your body that your liver and kidneys could not naturally excrete, you would likely already be sick or even dead. Clearly, this is not the case in healthy individuals. Your organs are excellent at performing their job – you do not need the help of a bogus tea.

One of the best ways to get the benefits of green tea is to consume matcha green tea, a concentrated powdered green tea from Japan that seems to have some noteworthy fat-burning benefits. What’s in matcha that makes it so beneficial for everything from cognitive function to enhancing fat-burning? It’s the catechins, a type of antioxidant found in high levels in green tea that may reduce body weight, speed up recovery following workouts and decrease free radical damage.
By the way, when it comes to ephedra, it's not particularly dangerous. Instudies comparing groups of people who use ephedra products with those who do not, there is virtually no difference in the rate of heart attacks and strokes! Nevertheless, I am not a fan of ephedra because it exhausts the adrenal glands, and I do not use it in any of my formulations—but nonsense is still nonsense.
Immediate weight loss is not uncommon after a detox, especially one that involves a laxative. Unfortunately this is usually due to losses in water and possibly muscle tissue, depending on the how disruptive the detox was to normal body function. Regardless of the weight loss, the body will move back to its pre-detox weight over time if diet and activity levels remain the same.
While your cells constantly detoxify, consider doing a more formal detox as a spring (or fall) full-body cleanse. These plans, which typically last two to three weeks, include all the essentials to help your liver and other organs optimally detoxify, including protein, nutrients, and a detox-minded eating plan. Our Detox System provides all the nutrient support you need to keep your natural cellular and body detoxification in peak, all in one convenient package.
There’s a reason we fall for the marketing of detoxification — we seem hardwired to believe we need it, perhaps related to our susceptibility to ideas of sympathetic magic. Purification rituals date back to the earliest reaches of recorded history. The idea that we’re somehow poisoning ourselves and we need to atone for our sins seems to be a part of human nature, which may explain why it’s still a part of most of the world’s religions. It’s not miasmas or sin that we’re as worried about today, however. As our knowledge of biology grew, these fears manifested as “autointoxication.” Clean out the bowels, went the theory, and you could cure any illness. Science discarded autointoxication by the 1900’s as we gained a better understanding of anatomy, physiology, and the true cause of disease. Yet the term persists today – but now it’s marketing slogan. Today’s version of autointoxication argues that our environment is increasingly toxic, and it’s making us ill. Depending on who you ask, some combination of food additives, salt, meat, fluoride, prescription drugs, smog, vaccine ingredients, GMOs, not “eating clean”, or perhaps not “eating paleo” are causing a buildup of “toxins” in the body. And don’t forget gluten. Gluten is evil and therefore it is a toxin. (Never mind the science.) So what is the actual “toxin” that is causing you vague but apparently real harm? Detox kits and treatments never name the toxins that they remove, because they’ve never been shown to remove toxins. Picking one common drug store detox kit, Renew Life says:
Toxins are any substance that can be poisonous or cause negative health effects. “Toxin” refers to all the metals, chemicals, pollutants, artificial food ingredients, pesticides, and poisons that cause the body harm.[1] “Toxin” is a very broad term and it’s even, unfortunately, become a bit of a buzzword to some. Artificially created chemicals can be toxins, but naturally occurring substances can be toxic, too. Arsenic is a natural toxin. Technically, so is cobra venom (though you’re less likely to find this contaminating your town’s water supply).

Along with vitamins C and E, it boosts immunity and increases one’s resistance to infections, parasites, and yeast overgrowth. The Master Cleanse alleges to "purify the glands and cells" and "relieve pressure and irritation in the nerves." And of course, it will make you lose weight by revving your metabolism and detoxing you. Originally propositioned by a naturopath who thought that all disease was caused by toxic build-up that could be only be healed via detoxing, it’s remained popular for decades. It’s common to mix the vile concoction of lemon water, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper at home, but it’s become such a well-known cleanse that some brands offers a pre-bottled version of it (for $6.99, naturally).

Popularised by questionable internet personalities such as self-styled toxin-hunter Vani Hari (aka Food Babe), the term “detox” has been recklessly bandied around with little consideration for accuracy of use – and frankly, it’s terrifying consumers. But if you buy into the hype, then you are fat, tired, and unhealthy because “dangerous toxins” have accumulated in your body.

Other popular liquid cleanses use brewed tea, apple cider vinegar, or lemon water as their main supposed detoxifying ingredient. And while some research, such as one study published in the journal Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, has linked those foods to potential health benefits, none is a magic bullet on its own. (2) In fact, pros say, there’s only one liquid you really need to flush toxins out of your system: water.
