The South Beach Diet aims to be a lifelong eating plan that you adapt when you reach the maintenance period, which is phase 3. By this point, you have learned how to eat in a healthy way, meaning you can have occasional treats, like a slice of cake, but by using what you learned in phases 1 and 2, you keep yourself from veering too far off the plan.

In February 2017, advertising for the show sparked criticism in Germany, where Netflix promoted the show with posters depicting a human finger sliced up like a currywurst, a popular German fast food dish. After receiving more than 50 complaints that the advertising was glorifying violence and inducing fear, especially in children, the German Advertising Council, a self-regulatory institution, forwarded the complaints to the company. Netflix then decided to end the campaign and remove all posters.[14]

The new season also adds some recurring new faces and a bunch of guest stars, including Joel McHale, Gerald McRaney, Zachary Knighton, and Maggie Lawson. McHale and Lawson step into the shoes of Chris and Christa, a successful, type-A married realtor couple who expose Joel and Sheila’s competitive streak. Castle and This Is Us star Gerald McRaney also joins the cast as Ed Thune, a retired army colonel Joel finds intimidating, while Zachary Knighton plays a laid-back Serbian Californian on a ruthless quest to uncover the truth about the undead. The Hammonds—husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant), wife Sheila (Drew Barrymore), and daughter Abby (Liv Hewson)—are a typical middle-class family living in suburban Santa Clarita, with Joel and Sheila working as real-estate agents for the same firm. While showing a house to potential buyers, Sheila throws up a great deal of vomit and a strange red ball of flesh. This causes them to lose the house's listing to their co-worker, the sleazy Gary West (Nathan Fillion). After vomiting, however, Sheila begins to show changes to her personality, becoming bolder and more impulsive. She exhibits physical changes as well, such as the lack of a heartbeat, thickening blood, and a strong craving for raw meat. Their neighbor's son Eric (Skyler Gisondo) suggests that Sheila may have become a zombie, a fact the family soon confirms. The Hammonds now face the challenge of having to keep Sheila fed on human flesh without alerting the authorities, especially their cop neighbors.

To design the DASH breakfast that works best for you, keep several points in mind. There is an emphasis on reducing sodium intake. That means you should limit table salt during cooking, and use restraint at the table. However, not everyone is “salt sensitive,” and thus not everyone will experience blood pressure reductions due to limitations on salt in the diet. Boosting fiber, and cutting added sugars, however, should help keep blood pressure in check no matter who you are.
The DASH trial showed that dietary patterns can and do affect blood pressure in the high normal BP to moderately hypertensive adult population (systolic < 180 mm Hg & diastolic of 80 to 95 mm Hg).[9] Respectively, the DASH or “combination” diet lowered blood pressures by an average of 5.5 and 3.0 mm Hg for systolic and diastolic, compared with the control diet. The minority portion of the study sample and the hypertensive portion both showed the largest reductions in blood pressure from the combination diet against the control diet. The hypertensive subjects experienced a drop of 11.4 mm Hg in their systolic and 5.5 mm Hg in their diastolic phases.[9] The fruits-and-vegetables diet was also successful, although it produced more modest reductions compared with the control diet (2.8 mm Hg systolic and 1.1 mm Hg diastolic).[10] In the subjects with and without hypertension, the combination diet effectively reduced blood pressure more than the fruits-and-vegetables diet or the control diet did. The data indicated that reductions in blood pressure occurred within two weeks of subjects’ starting their designated diets,[10] and that the results were generalizable to the target sample of the U.S. population.[9] Side effects were negligible, but the NEJM study reports that some subjects reported constipation as a problem. At the end of the intervention phase, 10.1, 5.4 & 4.0 percent of the subjects reported this problem for the control, fruits-and-vegetables and combination diets, respectively, showing that the fruits and vegetables and combination diets reduce constipation. Apart from only one subject (on the control diet) who was suffering from cholecystitis, other gastrointestinal symptoms had a low rate of incidence.
Triglycerides are a common form of fat that we digest. Triglycerides are the main ingredient in animal fats and vegetable oils. Elevated levels of triglycerides are a risk factor for heart disease, heart attack, stroke, fatty liver disease, and pancreatitis. Elevated levels of triglycerides are also associated with diseases like diabetes, kidney disease, and medications (for example, diuretics, birth control pills, and beta blockers). Dietary changes, and medication if necessary can help lower triglyceride blood levels.

The diet doesn't offer balanced nutrition: some of the recommended foods are high in sodium, the reduced calorie intake is below the recommended allotment for both men and women, and you may not receive sufficient fiber, vitamins, and minerals during this three-day period. Prolonged application of the diet may weaken your organs and immunity as well as increase your risk of heart damage.
The Military Diet is no different from any other plan that requires you to count calories to lose weight. On your three days "on" the calories are counted for you, but only if you eat the bizarre combination of foods that are suggested. If you substitute any food on your three days “on” you are required to measure your food and count calories. On your four days “off” you are also required to keep a food log and count calories.
Many experts believe that when people lose weight very quickly due to severely restricting their calorie intake they are actually losing a combination of water, some fat mass and also some muscle mass. (1) A fast decline in water that’s stored inside muscles and other tissues is likely the primary reason that someone can drop pounds so quickly when following a calorie-restrictive plan like the 3-day military diet.
Lucky for me, I did South Beach while it was freezing outside. I’m usually a self-appointed lower-middle-class socialite, but none of my friends wanted to leave their place during the cold snap, so I was able to stay in and cook and sleep. The handful of times that I did go out, I found the diet challenging. There’s something nice about having a few drinks at a birthday party or over a delicious meal.
That’s because many of the risk factors for heart disease are actually under our control. They include engaging in adequate exercise on a routine basis, avoiding obesity, and eating a healthful diet. Simply cutting added sugars from the diet, for example, can slash your risk. Adding more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—and eating less processed and red meat—can also affect your risk profile significantly. Too much sugar and too much consumption of meat have been linked to poorer health. Conversely, replacing these foods with more healthful alternatives can be beneficial.
While season one was a bit of a mess, it was still enjoyable. In season two, the show's found its footing and adds some hilarious and surprising twists to the narrative and characters. Barrymore and Olyphant's chemistry drives the show at this point, but the lore behind Sheila's condition, and the social satire at the show's heart, come together in a way that feels more natural than season one.
Season 2 launched on March 23. In previewing the season ahead of its launch, Barrymore told Variety: “I think the show is about a married a couple and a marriage that’s constantly getting challenged. And this husband and wife react to that. But I also love the balance. One moment you’re hearing the craziest thing you’ve ever said or heard and the next [it’s] where are our garden hoses and why are they getting stolen? Typical mundane suburban things. We’re also raising a teenage daughter, so there’s a domestic element. It’s all very human and suburban and relatable, and the stakes are crazy. But I think in this world, you need to go to this crazy place for it to be shocking.”

In the 1950s, the American Diabetes Association, in conjunction with the U.S. Public Health Service, introduced the "exchange scheme". This allowed people to swap foods of similar nutrition value (e.g., carbohydrate) for another. For example, if wishing to have more than normal carbohydrates for dessert, one could cut back on potatoes in one's first course. The exchange scheme was revised in 1976, 1986, and 1995.[10]


Cooking is probably the hardest part of the DASH diet. Otherwise, it’s pretty unrestrictive, you don’t need to buy anything special to follow it and everyone in the house can enjoy it. “It will likely help the whole family support good health, and since it’s based on whole, lightly or unprocessed foods, it’s more of a long-term eating style rather than a diet,” Ward says. That means you’re more likely to stick with it.
