Again, there’s an easy short answer: Yes. By drastically limiting your calorie intake, your body is burning more than it’s taking in, and you’ll shed pounds quickly, possibly even that 10 pounds in one week that others who've tried the diet have claimed. However, the diet itself is only designed to last one week. If you're looking to get a jump start on your weight loss journey, it can be a good place to begin. But if you're looking to make healthy changes in your life, longer-term solutions might be the better fit.
Despite sticking to the guidelines for 14 days, I lost just 2.5 pounds, all during the first seven days, and nada during the last seven. Although that’s better than nothing—and I did notice that my tummy was a little less poochy and I could again see some of the definition in my arms—I was salty. It seemed like the South Beach Diet results promised in the book skipped over me. It felt like a whole bunch of struggle with very little benefit.
Eating out is possible on the DASH Diet, but proceed with caution. Restaurant meals are notoriously salty, oversized and fatty, so you’ll need to be conscientious if you dine out. NHLBI suggests avoiding salt by shunning pickled, cured or smoked items; limiting condiments; choosing fruits or vegetables instead of soup; and requesting the chef find other ways to season your meal. You can also drink alcohol moderately on the DASH Diet.
If what you're attracted to is the idea of a quick, three day challenge, Palinski-Wade has other ideas. "Challenge yourself to eat a minimum of 30 grams of fiber per day and at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. This would still reduce calorie intake while providing your body with nutrients that promote health all while allowing you to develop eating habits that can actually lead to sustained weight loss." If it's the idea of inermittent fasting that you like, there are other ways to try that, too.

And the series takes a lighthearted but firm stand in favor of punching Nazis, and / or of tearing Nazis limb from limb and eating them.
Although sugar does not cause the blood sugar to rise any higher than other carbohydrates, it should be eaten along with other healthy foods. If you choose to drink a 12-ounce can of a sugar-sweetened soft drink, that would use up about 45 grams of carba, and you wouldn't have gotten any nutrition (protein, vitamins, or minerals). What a waste of calories!

Hemoglobin A1c or HbA1c is a protein on the surface of red blood cells. The HbA1c test is used to monitor blood sugar levels in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes over time. Normal HbA1c levels are 6% or less. HbA1c levels can be affected by insulin use, fasting, glucose intake (oral or IV), or a combination of these and other factors. High hemoglobin A1c levels in the blood increases the risk of microvascular complications, for example, diabetic neuropathy, eye, and kidney disease.
Going forward, I'm definitely going to be a whole lot nicer to carbs, and I actually think I will work with a dietitian to lose what remains of these 10 pounds. I want to try to get to the bottom of my food triggers instead of looking for a quick fix like I did with the South Beach Diet. In the meantime, I will challenge myself to remember my long-term goals and take a walk instead of reaching for a bagel on high-stress days—now that I have the energy to do so, of course.

An approach that has been popular with some people with type 1 diabetes mellitus since 2000 is known as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating). Richard K. Bernstein is critical of the standard American Diabetes Association diet plan. His plan includes very limited carbohydrate intake (30 grams per day) along with frequent blood glucose monitoring, regular strenuous muscle-building exercise and, for people using insulin, frequent small insulin injections if needed. His treatment target is "near normal blood sugars" all the time.
She's not confident about long-term results, either. "I’d wager that most people won’t keep the weight off, because the Military Diet doesn’t offer enough guidance on how to expand beyond its prescribed foods. Plus, the diet doesn’t offer guidance on how to deal with all the other facets of weight loss, such as emotional eating, dealing with temptations, restaurant eating, relapse, etc... There are better weight loss plans out there that are more nutritionally balanced, and address the multi-faceted nature of weight loss which includes exercise, emotions, support, etc." If you're looking for one, Jibrin recommends the DASH diet, a Mediterranean-style diet, or Weight Watchers. "Ideally, join a program that helps you with the other facets of weight loss, such as exercise, emotional eating, and support."
Quite a variety of questions on the South Beach Diet. Norma you do an excellent job of reviewing these diets. I signed up with the South Beach Diet and received my food 8 days later. I have been on the diet for 7 days and have lost 4.2 pounds. I am on the Platinum Plan which is the most expensive but I figure I will only be buying the main meals for 8-10 weeks and I can afford the $13/day expense to take 20-25 pounds off. So far I am really enjoying the food and the easy prep. My side-by-side fridge is full of boxes and the plan guide is easy to follow. I have the app and love it though it could use some improvements. I would highly recommend this choice for a delivery meal diet plan. I have a dairy intolerance and a touch of IBS and the only meals I cannot digest are the SBD COMPLETE SHAKES for morning snacks. So far I have been able to substitute with their other shakes and snack bars with no problem.
On the South Beach Diet, you get to that point in three phases, the first of which involves a cutthroat elimination of all carbs for two weeks. White rice and baked goods were out, of course, but so were natural, healthy-for-you sources like fruits. The book says the process is meant to help a person rid herself of sugar cravings and also initiate “early rapid weight loss” to inspire the person to stick with it. The second phase includes the slow reintroduction of foods like whole grains until the person’s goal weight is reached, while the third phase is when the diet has become a lifestyle that helps her maintain that weight.
Also, because the diet limits carbohydrate consumption, it could have some additional beneficial effects: David Ludwig, MD, PhD, a professor in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, noted in a post on the Harvard School of Public Health site that “fad diets” like South Beach and Atkins can, by helping limit the amount of processed carbs people eat, produce tangible health benefits for people backed up by sound scientific reasons. (6) That’s because the quickest way to stabilize blood glucose and lower insulin levels is to reduce carb intake, he says.
Unfortunately, there is no word like ‘permanent weight loss’ in any dictionary. It is impossible to achieve permanent results unless until you follow a healthy lifestyle for your life. So, even if you lose some pounds doing the military diet or any other diet for that matter, you’ll regain it once you get back to your regular/unhealthy eating patterns.

Other dieters follow the military diet 4 days off rule, which means that after 4 days of following a 1500 calorie diet, they do the 3 Day Military Diet again. So, what does a 1500 calorie diet look like? Here are some ideas for how you can plan your meals for your 4 days off:
MYTH. Because carbs affect blood sugar levels so quickly, you may be tempted to eat less of them and substitute more protein. But take care to choose your protein carefully. If it comes with too much saturated fat, that’s risky for your heart’s health. Keep an eye on your portion size too. Talk to your dietitian or doctor about how much protein is right for you.

Hi, great reviews & information. I’m trying to decide between Southbeach or OPTAVIA. 10years ago when I was 32yr I did the SB diet (following the original book version) I was very happy with results. Now in my 40’s (3 kids later) I’m having a hard time keeping weight off. I saw another mom in her 40s at the gym she lost over 20lb with OPTAVIA. I looked up the program & it looks similar to SB new diet plan but a lot more expensive. Do you have any advice.
Fresh vegetables are a great option, and usually the tastiest option. Studies show that frozen veggies have just as many vitamins and nutrients because they are often frozen within hours of harvesting. Just check to make sure there aren't added fats or sweeteners in the sauces that are on some frozen veggies. If you don't like vegetables on their own, try preparing them with fresh or dried herbs, olive oil, or a vinaigrette dressing. Aiming to consume a rainbow of colors through your vegetables is a good way to get all of your nutrients.
Meanwhile, saturated fats and trans fats can harm your heart and overall health, according to the American Heart Association. To spot trans fats, look for the term “hydrogenated” on labels of processed foods, such as packaged snacks, baked goods, and crackers. “I always tell my clients to double-check the ingredient list to make sure they don’t see any partially hydrogenated oil in their food products,” Massey says.
