Nut allergies are some of the most common allergies in the world. There are others that just don’t like the taste of peanut butter. If that is the case then almond butter is the way to go. For others, pumpkin butter, sunflower-seed butter, chickpea hummus, soy butter, or unflavored bean dip are all great alternatives. Two tablespoons of unsalted/unflavored sunflower seeds will work as well. Almond butter is the most common substitute. Hummus and sunflower seed butter are popular as well.
Whole grains, such as brown rice, quinoa, and oatmeal are good sources of fiber and nutrients; and have a low glycemic load making them good food choices. Processed food labels make it very confusing to understand whole grains. For example, "whole wheat bread" is made in many different ways, and some are not that different from white bread in its blood sugar impact (glycemic load). The same is true for whole grain pasta, it's still pasta. Whole grains have less of an impact on blood sugar because of the lower glycemic load. Choose whole grains that are still in their grain form like brown rice and quinoa, or look at the fiber content on the nutrition label. For example, a "good" whole grain bread will have 3+ grams of fiber per slice.
Instead of having processed wheat toast, try having a small portion of whole grains (such as gluten-free oats, quinoa or brown rice) or better yet a totally unprocessed source of carbohydrates like a baked sweet potato. Another option is to skip the grains and starchy veggies altogether, substituting them for 1/4 cup of plain yogurt with a teaspoon of flaxseeds.
Hi Deloris – Personally, I think Nutrisystem is the best meal delivery diet and the one I recommend most. That said, South Beach Diet is a great option too. The meals and food types vary between programs, so I’d suggest looking at both menus to see if there’s one that you might like better. When it comes to weight loss, they both work about the same – 1 to 2 pounds per week for most folks. Hope that helps – NS
