The military diet is a very low-calorie diet plan that some people choose to follow several days per week in hopes of losing weight quickly. How much weight loss might the military diet lead to? Up to 10 pounds in 3–7 days, according to those who promote the diet. However, there isn’t much evidence that this speed of weight loss will occur for every person, and even if it does, there are definitely still some drawbacks of the military diet to be aware of.

For the first three days, the diet consists of three distinct meal plans. For the first day, breakfast consists of half a grapefruit, a slice of whole-wheat toast with 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, and a cup of caffeinated black tea or coffee. Fresh vegetables are a great option, and usually the tastiest option. Studies show that frozen veggies have just as many vitamins and nutrients because they are often frozen within hours of harvesting. Just check to make sure there aren't added fats or sweeteners in the sauces that are on some frozen veggies. If you don't like vegetables on their own, try preparing them with fresh or dried herbs, olive oil, or a vinaigrette dressing. Aiming to consume a rainbow of colors through your vegetables is a good way to get all of your nutrients.
I don’t understand all of the chocolate and nuts that you eat in South Beach Phase One. I have eaten more chocolate (or drank in shakes) than ever, as I rarely eat chocolate… I gained 2 lbs in the first 4 days. I stuck to their chocolate and nut diet with a little bit of meat and sauce, and some raw vegetables, and I gained weight! I broke down and cried.
If you do this specific calorie deficit diet, then go back to eating how you used to, (which for starters, is probably more than 1200 kcal a day) of course you are going to put it back on in the following days off! Allow your stomach to shrink and only eat what you need, listen to your body. This diet (i did it for 4 months and lost 45 lbs) taught me to listen to my body, to feed it the right things when I was hungry and not just follow my emotions or eyes. It taught me to stop eating when I was full...and since my stomach was not so stretched out from over eating...full came quicker! It means I kept off the weight!
Just before her birthday, Rocio decided to lose a few pounds by following the Military Diet. Using an old photocopy her mom had given her from years before, Rocio got started with the diet. The Mediterranean style eating pattern focuses on mostly plant-based foods like vegetables, fruit, whole grains, cereals, nuts, seeds, and beans, seasonally fresh, and locally grown foods. Olive oil is the main source of fat. This eating pattern also includes a small amount of dairy products, such as cheese and yogurt, fish, and poultry. Red meat is limited. Wine can be consumed in small amounts (1-2 glasses of wine per day) with meals.
Your body consumes calories, even while you’re resting. A sedentary person (no exercise) burns an average of about 1600 calories in a day. These calories, however, are usually replaced with what you do eat. Through the first 3 Days of the diet you’ll eat less than what you consume, which means there’s an additional deficit of about 400 calories per day. So, without exercising, you can expect to cut out 1400 calories per day during the first 3 days of the Military Diet. Add in some walking and dedicate a bit of time to exercise, and you’ll eliminate another 600 calories or more! Based on these numbers, you’d cut out about 2000 calories per day, resulting in a weight loss of less than 3 pounds during the first 3 days of the Military Diet.
The DASH diet is based on NIH studies that examined three dietary plans and their results. None of the plans were vegetarian, but the DASH plan incorporated more fruits and vegetables, low fat or nonfat dairy, beans, and nuts than the others studied. The DASH diet reduced systolic blood pressure by 6 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 3 mm Hg in patients with high normal blood pressure (formerly called "pre-hypertension"). Those with hypertension dropped by 11 and 6 mm Hg, respectively. These changes in blood pressure occurred with no changes in body weight. The DASH dietary pattern is adjusted based on daily caloric intake ranging from 1,600 to 3,100 dietary calories.
Lucky for me, I did South Beach while it was freezing outside. I’m usually a self-appointed lower-middle-class socialite, but none of my friends wanted to leave their place during the cold snap, so I was able to stay in and cook and sleep. The handful of times that I did go out, I found the diet challenging. There’s something nice about having a few drinks at a birthday party or over a delicious meal.
By the time you reach dinner on the 3 Day Military Diet, you’ll be relieved to see the feast you’re allowed to enjoy. Fats, contrary to what many people believe, actually play an important role in our bodies. They are a source of energy and also help your body to absorb essential vitamins and minerals. However, there are different kinds of fats. Some are healthy, while others aren’t. The fat in ice cream is saturated fat, and is considered an in-between fat, meaning it’s not particularly good or bad. When consumed in moderation, it won’t do you much harm. However, it’s preferable to consume polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats which are typically found in vegetables, nuts, fish and seeds. Now that you understand the role of the ice cream; let’s discuss the nutritional value of the rest of the foods in the dinners.
If you are overweight, combining physical activity with a reduced-calorie eating plan can lead to even more benefits. In the Look AHEAD: Action for Health in Diabetes study,1 overweight adults with type 2 diabetes who ate less and moved more had greater long-term health benefits compared to those who didn’t make these changes. These benefits included improved cholesterol levels, less sleep apnea, and being able to move around more easily.
The DASH plan was originally developed to help treat or prevent high blood pressure (hypertension), but it may also reduce the risk of other diseases, including diabetes. It may have the additional benefit of helping you lose weight. People following the DASH plan are encouraged to reduce portion sizes and eat foods rich in blood pressure-lowering nutrients, such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
South Beach actually has fairly good meals and is a good value for the price. However, they have chronic shipping problems with FedEx and UPS that results in food arriving late with dry ice that has completely disintegrated and the food is thawed and leaking. According to the lovely SB customer service representative this is a recurrent problem they are working on promptly. I cancelled my subscription because I would prefer not to get sick if the food is handled or stored appropriately.
The diet food that Southbeach diet sends is horrible! I even had my husband taste it to make sure it was not just me. It is has very little taste. The breakfast meals are the worst. I tried their bacon, onion and pepper egg scramble and I couldn’t even force it down. It was absolutely horrible!!! I have had Jenni Craig food and at least I like their food. Southbeach frozen and shelf food, not so much. What a waste of money! I found out today that even if you are not satisfied with their product they will not refund you nor will they accept returns. I can’t see how this company will even make it when their food tastes so bad. I spent over $300 for food I can’t even force myself to eat. VERY BAD FOOD! What a waste of money!!!

Aside from just looking for a quick way to drop pounds without improving your health, you should also have very strong willpower. This diet may allow you to eat ice cream- but it doesn't allow you to stray from the laid out plans at all. It's also very likely that the diet will make you quite hungry; so you must be prepared to not give in to those hunger pangs.
If you're overweight, which is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, you may also need to reduce the number of calories you eat to aid in weight loss. The good news is losing excess pounds, along with making other lifestyle changes, such as getting more exercise, may help control your glucose so you don't need to take medication. In addition, you can still eat a variety of nutritious and delicious foods without feeling deprived.
A 30-year-old Caucasian male without significant past medical history presented with a two day history of nausea, vomiting and diffuse abdominal pain. The patient denied use of any medications (prescription or nonprescription) or any illicit substances. He did admit to occasional ethanol ingestion stating that he consumed four alcoholic beverages (approximately 0.6 ounces ethanol each) the night prior to the onset of symptoms. The patient had a family history of diabetes mellitus type 2 on both the paternal and maternal side.
I am SO thankful that healthy lifestyle alternatives are adamantly mentioned in this article. I feel that the military diet is more of a tagline or “attention getter” and does not full give the the results that people are assuming they’ll receive. I feel that this method would get rid of bloat and excess water weight far before it would get rid of body fat, and the amount of fat lost will be gained back immediately upon return to a “normal diet”. While this may help a dieter become more familiar with portion control, I feel like the military diet grabs the attention of new/crash dieters more than experienced dieters that are looking for a healthy lifestyle.

Many experts believe that when people lose weight very quickly due to severely restricting their calorie intake they are actually losing a combination of water, some fat mass and also some muscle mass.
