Of the individual components of the DASH diet score, high intakes of nuts, legumes, and low-fat dairy products were associated with reduced risk of kidney disease.6
Most recently, researchers looked at the DASH diets effect on cholesterol values as well. It turns out, those looking to control blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels have even more reason to try the DASH; the DASH diet significantly lowered total and LDL-cholesterol (referred to as the "bad" cholesterol) levels in subjects with borderline-high and high cholesterol.

The biggest step you can make is getting your mind made up to actually do what you can to help yourself. The military diet and military diet substitutes will only get you so far. Every diet has crazy claims and ardent opponents.  If you look for the supporting studies, you will wind up with relatively few options. But as I said earlier, follow the diet as closely as you can.  It’s made up this way for a reason.  Good luck!
The 3 Day Military Diet is 3 days. It works like this: You follow the 3-day meal plan and then follow a more flexible diet for 4 days. During the 4 days off, it’s best to eat a diet of about 1500 calories per day. Then, you can repeat the cycle or stop dieting altogether. To maintain weight loss, it’s always best if you follow a healthy diet- free of processed foods and rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
Nut allergies are some of the most common allergies in the world. There are others that just don’t like the taste of peanut butter.  If that is the case then almond butter is the way to go.  For others, pumpkin butter,  sunflower-seed butter, chickpea hummus, soy butter, or unflavored bean dip are all great alternatives. Two tablespoons of unsalted/unflavored sunflower seeds will work as well.  Almond butter is the most common substitute.  Hummus and sunflower seed butter are popular as well.
Even if you’re seeing improvement with regular exercise, do not change your prescribed insulin regimen without consulting your doctor. Test prior to, during, and after exercise if you are on insulin and adding or making changes to your exercise program. This is true even if you think the insulin is causing you to gain weight. In an age when processed foods are considered taboo, I’m curious about any considerations that come with eating these prepared meals. I started the program and was not a fan of the food. So I called to cancel the delivery and was told there is a $125.00 EARLY CANCELLATION FEE! Try to cancel on the website… good luck… I had to call to cancel and spoke with an overbearing cancellation member who would not stop grilling me about every part of the diet I did not like and how much weight did I want to loose. I wish they would have been more honest UPFRONT about the costs of cancelling if you are not satisfied.
I tried cottage cheese for the first time in my life. Someone who shall remain nameless told me that it tastes like what you flavor it with, and she suggested maybe some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. Well, I can tell you wholeheartedly that cottage cheese tastes like lumpy-ass cheese, and if you put pumpkin pie spice on it, you pretty much create an insult to Thanksgiving.

Foods with a high glycemic index tend to increase your blood sugar faster, higher and longer than do foods with a lower index. Some evidence suggests that this increase in blood sugar can boost your appetite, leading to increased eating and weight gain and possibly diabetes, which can all contribute to cardiovascular disease.
There are no meetings to attend or packaged meals to buy. The food is easy to find in the grocery store, and there’s very little cooking or food prep needed. But you may feel very hungry on the diet, so you may need willpower to get through 3 days without cheating. You’ll only be eating about 1,500 calories daily, so you may feel more sluggish than usual. If you choose to exercise, it may make you even more tired.

Just started my 2nd month of South Beach diet and have to say I think the food is actually pretty good. I have lost almost 8 pounds so far, so really happy with the results too. At this rate will probably keep getting the meals another month or two, but like where I am currently heading. Like Karen said don’t expect 5-star cuisine and you should be OK as long as you keep your expectations in check. The food isn’t the best thing I have ever had, but I wasn’t expecting it to be either since it’s microwavable diet food. That said, it tastes good enough and I’m losing weight, which is why I signed up in the first place!
If you do this specific calorie deficit diet, then go back to eating how you used to, (which for starters, is probably more than 1200 kcal a day) of course you are going to put it back on in the following days off! Allow your stomach to shrink and only eat what you need, listen to your body. This diet (i did it for 4 months and lost 45 lbs) taught me to listen to my body, to feed it the right things when I was hungry and not just follow my emotions or eyes. It taught me to stop eating when I was full...and since my stomach was not so stretched out from over eating...full came quicker! It means I kept off the weight!
When you substitute foods, make sure you don’t use the same amount of the substitute as the original without checking caloric equivalence first. For example, if you want to substitute Greek yogurt for cottage cheese, you can actually eat a bit more of the yogurt than the prescribed amount of cottage cheese. Just 1 cup of 2% cottage cheese contains 194 calories, while 1 cup of 2% Greek yogurt contains 150 calories, meaning you can have additional 1/3 cup of the yogurt. Make use of a calorie calculator if you’re not sure about your allowances.   
Restaurants and dinners with friends are doable on South Beach Diet, even in phase one – if you can stick to the guidelines. Skip the bread during phase one, for example, but enjoy a whole-grain roll in later phases. An all-phase-friendly tip: Order soup as a first course, then have a salad and choose lean protein for your entree. That way you'll already be feeling full by the time your main dish arrives, making you less likely to splurge on dessert. Grilled fish, turkey and filet mignon are all smart choices.
For people with diabetes, healthy eating is not simply a matter of "what one eats", but also when one eats. The question of how long before a meal one should inject insulin is asked in Sons Ken, Fox and Judd (1998). It depends upon the type one takes and whether it is long-, medium- or quick-acting insulin. This is called the Somogyi effect.
Pay attention to the balance of macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbohydrates) in a meal to support stable blood sugar levels. Specifically, fat, protein, and fiber all slow down the absorption of carbohydrates and thus allow time for a slower, lower insulin release and a steady transport of glucose out of the blood and into the target tissues - this is a good thing.

With intermittent fasting, you narrow the size of your eating window, or you occasionally do fasts of 24 hours. For instance, you can start eating at noon and finish up by 8pm, essentially skipping breakfast. I wrote all about it in our “Beginner’s Guide to Intermittent Fasting,” where I outlined the benefits of teaching your body to consume food more efficiently, and also reduces the total number of calories you are probably eating.
South Beach Diet is OK. There are a lot of complaints on this page,and here’s what I’ll say. People don’t like the small portions and frozen food, but it was my bad decisions with food (and big portions) that made me have to go on a diet like South Beach to begin with. If you are going to try meal delivery diet, try Nutrisystem instead. It’s cheaper, a little better, and even made by the same company as South Beach Diet!

MilitaryDiet.co and TheMilitaryDiet.com, the two main resource sites for the diet regimen, are both run by fans and proponents of the diet without any cited health professional credentials. According to them, though, the military diet plan is an intermittent fasting diet that combines three days of a strict, low-calorie meal plan with four days of eating whatever you want (as long as it still falls below the calorie intake).

I am SO thankful that healthy lifestyle alternatives are adamantly mentioned in this article. I feel that the military diet is more of a tagline or “attention getter” and does not full give the the results that people are assuming they’ll receive. I feel that this method would get rid of bloat and excess water weight far before it would get rid of body fat, and the amount of fat lost will be gained back immediately upon return to a “normal diet”. While this may help a dieter become more familiar with portion control, I feel like the military diet grabs the attention of new/crash dieters more than experienced dieters that are looking for a healthy lifestyle.

Based on calories, you need to cut out or burn 3500 calories to lose 1 pound . Multiply that by 10 pounds, and you’re talking about cutting out 35,000 calories in a week. That’s quite a bit! If we consider your eating habits, most people consume about 2000 to 2500 calories every day. On the Military Diet, you’re cutting back to about 1200 calories a day on the 3 Day diet, and probably around 1500-1700 calories on the 4 days off. That means just in calorie consumption, you’re cutting out about 1000 per day during the restricted portion of the diet.
She also says that cutting certain foods and drinks out of your diet point-blank, like soda, can be difficult. "While I’m no fan of sodas — they’ve have been linked to weight gain, and have no nutritional value — banning them without offering a substitute might backfire because people feel deprived. Deprivation can lead to rebellion and giving up on weight loss." Sticking to the meal plan is the hard part — but if you can do, you will lose a couple of pounds, the professor says. "If you actually follow it... then yes, you’ll certainly lose weight. You’re not going to lose 10 pounds of 'real weight' in 3 days though. If you lose 10 pounds, then most of it is water weight."
