Contrary to popular belief, not all carbs are off-limits if you’re managing diabetes. In fact, the ADA recommends vitamin-rich whole grains in a healthy diabetes diet. These foods contain fiber, which is beneficial for digestive health. Fiber can also promote feelings of fullness, preventing you from reaching for unhealthy snacks, and it can help slow the rise of blood sugar. Plus, whole grains contain healthy vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that are healthy for anyone, regardless of whether they have diabetes or not.
The "Nutrition Facts" label on most foods is the best way to get carbohydrate information, but not all foods have labels. Your local bookstore and library have books that list the carbohydrate in restaurant foods, fast foods, convenience foods and fresh foods. You will still need to weigh or measure the foods to know the amount of grams of carbohydrates present.
You can do both types of exercise for each of the three days, or just one of them. Then, when you’re on your 4 days off the diet, you can do both cardio and weight training, or perhaps lengthen the time you do either one of them by up to 45-60 minutes. You can also alternate days- doing cardio one day and strength training the next. This way you get the benefits of each, but only focus on one at a time.

Hi, great reviews & information. I’m trying to decide between Southbeach or OPTAVIA. 10years ago when I was 32yr I did the SB diet (following the original book version) I was very happy with results. Now in my 40’s (3 kids later) I’m having a hard time keeping weight off. I saw another mom in her 40s at the gym she lost over 20lb with OPTAVIA. I looked up the program & it looks similar to SB new diet plan but a lot more expensive. Do you have any advice.
We know now that it is okay for people with diabetes to substitute sugar-containing food for other carbohydrates as part of a balanced meal plan. Prevailing beliefs up to the mid-1990s were that people with diabetes should avoid foods that contain so-called "simple" sugars and replace them with "complex" carbohydrates, such as those found in potatoes and cereals. A review of the research at that time revealed that there was relatively little scientific evidence to support the theory that simple sugars are more rapidly digested and absorbed than starches, and therefore more apt to produce high blood glucose levels.
Get the idea? You need to include lots of fruit and vegetables in your diet. This really helps you feel full, without packing in the calories. As you can see in these two options, you can still add a few extra snacks or calories if you still feel hungry at meal or snack-time. You can always check your food’s calories by using one of the various calorie calculators available online such as the one offered by WebMD. Also notice that the only included drink is coffee. Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol and soda, as these will add a lot of calories. Instead, drink plenty of water or herbal tea. And, of course, the low-cal nature of the military diet can dangerous, says Amidor. The ketogenic diet in particular can be helpful for lowering appetite and promoting steady weight loss. The keto diet works by severely limiting carbohydrate consumption and reducing the body’s energy supply, which then forces fat to become the primary energy source.
