Because the Military Diet discourages substitutions, some may be led to believe that specific food choices have a “magical” effect to enhance weight loss. The truth is, there’s nothing special or unique about the combination of these foods over the three-day period. In fact, choosing different foods with similar macronutrient profiles would provide the exact results.

Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet loves people. That’s unusual for a zombie narrative. Most zombie narratives present people as lurching, decaying, cannibalistic monsters. During each of those scheduled three days, the military diet food plan is strict, and you’ll consume about 1,000-1,400 calories. Our calculations put most days around 1,150 calories. Here we present a case of hyperglycemic ketoacidosis associated with a low carbohydrate diet. The South Beach Diet is a popular diet plan which primarily relies on the restriction of dietary carbohydrates to achieve weight loss [1]. Our patient strictly adhered to 10 to 15 grams of carbohydrate per day for 3 weeks prior to presentation and lost 16 pounds. He was following the most stringent form of this diet, namely that being the form in which total carbohydrate consumption is limited to less than 20 grams daily. On presentation, our patient was felt to be in diabetic ketoacidosis but, interestingly, the patient was subsequently euglycemic without therapy and, even after two years of follow up, remained asymptomatic and euglycemic.

Simple carbohydrates (high glycemic load foods, or foods that are not part of a type 2 diabetes diet plan because they raise blood sugar levels) are processed foods, and don't contain other nutrients to slow down sugar absorption and thus these foods can raise blood sugar dangerously fast. Standard zombie narratives say she needs to be forced out of her job, tied in the basement, walled up, and / or shot in the head, with a swift and unceremonious corpse-burning to follow. When the zombies come, films and shows like The Walking Dead suggest that the only means to survival is embracing harsh masculine values: be tough, be ruthless, trust no one, carry lots of guns.
South Beach Diet results are definitely not magic or easy to come by, says registered dietitian Jessica Crandall, R.D., a certified diabetes educator and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Crandall likes that phase one focuses on decreasing sugar and eating lean proteins and high-fiber foods, but she still isn’t a fan of cutting out all carbs, especially ones from healthy, whole foods. “The first phase is extreme. It’s an eating plan that includes common, everyday foods that offer a multitude of benefits for all age groups. I have no reservations about the DASH Diet,” Ward says. However, if you have a hard time digesting grains, legumes and/or dairy, try the diet and see, Zibdeh adds. In those instances, it may not be best for you.
The diet I recommend in my book Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to your Physical and Spiritual Well-Being is similar to the DASH diet with the addition of omega-3 fatty acids and natural anti-inflammatory spices such as turmeric and ginger. Both are similar to the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables, crusty breads, whole grains, and olive oil as well as more fish and legumes and less meat and poultry than the typical Western diet contains. Whether you’re trying to lower blood pressure or simply eat well, you can’t go wrong with the DASH diet, or with the alternatives mentioned above.

These have been promoted as working by reducing spikes in blood sugar levels after eating.[25][26] However, the main contribution may be that overweight and obese people with Type 2 diabetes often lose weight while following these diets.[3][4] Any diet that causes significant weight loss in overweight and obese people with Type 2 diabetes is associated with improvements in blood sugar control.[3][4]

While sodium reduction alone often is a physician's go-to recommendation for lowering blood pressure, the DASH diet shows that reducing blood pressure through diet is the result of combining a team of nutrients—and sodium isn't the standout. It's the symbiosis of the DASH nutrients working together that makes the difference. The DASH dietary pattern consistently has proven to be effective for lowering blood pressure in diverse populations, including men, women, white individuals, and in those of various races and ethnicities who have either prehypertension or hypertension.3
Unfortunately, there is no word like ‘permanent weight loss’ in any dictionary. It is impossible to achieve permanent results unless until you follow a healthy lifestyle for your life. So, even if you lose some pounds doing the military diet or any other diet for that matter, you’ll regain it once you get back to your regular/unhealthy eating patterns.

The most agreed-upon recommendation is for the diet to be low in sugar and refined carbohydrates, while relatively high in dietary fiber, especially soluble fiber. People with diabetes are also encouraged to eat small frequent meals a day. Likewise, people with diabetes may be encouraged to reduce their intake of carbohydrates that have a high glycemic index (GI), although this is also controversial.[5] (In cases of hypoglycemia, they are advised to have food or drink that can raise blood glucose quickly, such as a sugary sports drink, followed by a long-acting carbohydrate (such as rye bread) to prevent risk of further hypoglycemia.) I am gluten intolerant so couldn’t do this diet, as I couldn’t see any gluten free alternatives on the lists. I’m sure there are some, so I’d be interested to find out? Other than that… the diet isn’t something I would think of doing as a long term solution to losing weight. Once you finish the diet, then what? Of course you are going to go back to eating some what normally and then regain? Or that’s what I would imagine. I do like that this article seems to be unbiased and more of an informative piece, meaning you can make up your own mind rather than being ‘sold’ something. I guess if there was a special event you needed to lose a few pounds for it may be good, not sure that I would try it myself though.

Some also claim that the 3-day military diet is supported by major organizations, including the American Heart Association, the Cleveland Clinic, the Mayo Clinic and Birmingham Hospital. But again, representatives from these organizations have stated that they are in no way tied to the military diet and had nothing to do with its creation — calling in to question the military diet reviews out there.
Day two is even lighter fare. For breakfast, have one slice of whole-wheat toast, one egg cooked however you like, and half a banana. Lunch is one cup of cottage cheese, one hard-boiled egg, and five (yep, count 'em out) saltine crackers. Does this actually work? Right now I'm on the keto diet where you eat no carbs or sugar. I've been on it for like 8 days and lost 4 and a half pounds. Another 4 days, I wasn't really eating so this made me lose 8.5 pounds total. I'm trying to lose 6 more pounds in the next 6 days for a trip. Will this make me gain weight because I've been on keto and my body is used to it so if I eat carbs or sugar..will I gain or will it still work?


Blood pressure is the measure of the force of blood flowing through blood vessels. Almost 86 million people in the United States have high blood pressure, and only one-half have it under control. About 13 million US adults with hypertension aren't even aware they have it and are going untreated.1 There are many causes of hypertension, but whatever the cause, the harmful repercussions include damaged arteries, aneurysms, enlarged heart, transient ischemic attack, stroke, dementia, kidney failure, retinopathy, sexual dysfunction in men, sleep apnea, and bone loss. That makes controlling blood pressure critical for disease prevention.2 High blood pressure can be defined as a reading higher than 140/90 mm Hg. Prehypertension is between 120/80 mm Hg and 139/89 mm Hg. Prehypertension is likely to become hypertension unless lifestyle changes, including diet, are made.2 The DASH diet is rich in several nutrients known to play important roles in regulating blood pressure, including potassium, magnesium, and calcium, and is lower in sodium and saturated fat than the typical American diet.
The study provided all foods and beverages to participants for eight weeks. None of the diets were vegetarian or used specialty foods. After two weeks, participants who added fruits and vegetables to a typical American diet or those on the DASH diet had lower blood pressure than those who followed a typical American diet alone. However, the participants on the DASH diet had the greatest effect of lowering their high blood pressure.
The hyperglycemic ketoacidosis in this patient may have been caused by increased concentrations of free fatty acids in the absence of carbohydrate-induced inhibition of beta-oxidation of fatty acids and in the presence of an abnormally high ratio of glucagons to insulin. Given the present day popularity of low-carbohydrate diet plans, healthcare providers should be aware of the apparent association between such diets and symptomatic ketoacidosis. In a patient with ketoacidosis suspected to be secondary to a low carbohydrate diet, all other causes of high anion gap acidosis should be ruled out before attributing the acidosis to the low carbohydrate diet.

Olyphant used to be known for dramatic roles like on Deadwood and Justified, but he's always been immensely skilled with comedy and gets to really showcase that here. Jokes are spread throughout the cast, but Joel gets a heavy heap of one-liners. And the beauty of Santa Clarita is that a one-liner is rarely a punchline; more often than not, it's Joel or someone else commenting on the absurdity of the situation or impracticality of a plan.
